I'm trying to build a debug version of rtl140.bpl to make debugging apps with runtime packages easier. I built the DPK and ran DCC32 on it, and it gets a ways in, then dies.

C:\Program Files (x86)\Embarcadero\RAD Studio\7.0\source\Win32\rtl\sys\Variants.pas(1072) Fatal: F2092 Program or unit 'Variants' recursively uses itself

But looking at Variants.pas, I can't see how. It only uses SysUtils and Types in the interface section, and neither of those use Variants, or use anything that uses Variants.

Does anyone have any idea why this is breaking?

This is one of the main reasons why we (the RAD Studio team) do not recommend rebuilding the core rtl package. It needs to be done very carefully and the units need to be listed in the contains section in a specific order.

Variants is a bit of a "bastard" unit. The compiler has specific knowledge of it such that when it sees the use of the Variant type, it will automatically add Variants to the uses list in order to ensure the actual RTL support for the Variant type is present. System.pas defers most all variant operations to the Variants unit, but since System cannot use any other units other than SysInit (which is also a very special unit), the compiler has to get involved.

At this time, I don't have any specific suggestions to make this work, other than try to rearrange the contains list in the .dpk and try again. Here's the contains list from the rtl.dpk that we used to build that package:

Well, I tried that and got the same error. I don't suppose there's a place on CC where debug versions of the runtime packages and their DCPs are available?
Mason Wheeler
(Or even just a debug BPL and DCP for rtl140. I could rebuild the rest easily enough, but I really need some way to poke around inside System and Generics.Collections.)
Mason Wheeler
There might be. I seem to remember that Chris Hesik was working on getting a debug .dcp that would work with the released rtl package. I do know that for the next release we're planning on providing debug .dcps for all the runtime packages.
Allen Bauer
Sweet! I'll be looking forward to it. I guess I'll have to ask Chris about a D2010 version in the meantime.
Mason Wheeler
AFAICS it is possible to create a rtl package + package header for debugging, but due the fact that ComObjWrapper is missing in the delivery this package can't be used together with the IDE or the vclie package. How about using just Variants.dcu instead of Variants.pas? If Chris had been able to provide debug DCPs for the D2010 packages he would have done this as he promissed in his blog.
Uwe Schuster
Hmm... Missing ComObjWrapper? That sounds like an oversight. IMO, everything in all the runtime packages should also be delivered at least as .dcus and included in the sources.
Allen Bauer
And that is an oversight since the unit was added to the RTL.And while we are at it. Where is "common\ScktComp.pas"
Andreas Hausladen
"common\ScktComp.pas" is $(BDS)\source\Win32\vcl\ScktComp.pas and "win\ADOInt.pas" and "win\OleDB.pas" can be found in $(BDS)\source\Win32\db.
