I always thought that wikipedia text was CC but GoogleMaps states that the text is GPL'd which leads to an interesting question, where is the source for google maps ?

Where does it say it's GPL? That's never been correct. Pages like this say it's GFDL. That used to be completely right, but Wikipedia has now moved to CC-BY-SA. However, most content is still available under both licenses.
But even if the text were GPL, I don't think that would make the Google Maps code a derivative work. So I don't think Google is required to release the Maps source code.

Goto google maps turn on wikipedia articles so your map has lotsof (w) logos. Click on any and scroll to the bottom of the bubble to read the (c) message.
