Any books you would recommend to learn scripting makefiles? I know gnu.org has manual, but hope there is a book with better explanations and examples.

I liked the O'Reily nutshell series book. I think it is still available on Amazon (link to the book on Amazon). The manual is not bad either.

I own that book. I think it's fairly crappy - the manual is much better.

this book will be a good for you however you can just download the chapter 11 for free which gives answers to your question.
