Hey mates,
I want to start my Bachelor Thesis in the next months but I'm still looking for ideas about a research topic. I like the Web Engineering field, and like to play with AJAX and Java. I also find the concept of WebSockets interesting. Does anyone of you has a nice research topic maybe on WebSockets otherwise on Web Engineering at hand, willing to share it with me? Some ideas or hints would be great ;-)

It appears that firewalls and proxy servers aren't compatible with WebSockets. Perhaps some research into how firewalls and proxy servers would have to change would be fruitful.
As far as other Web Engineering topics, there are few researchers doing usability studies. Jakob Nielsen is one researcher that I know about.
Another area of research would be better tools for web developers. You shouldn't have to know 5 different computer languages to get a decent web page running. :-)
