Any idea to develop a new software ?

I would like to have any idea to develop a software... from scratch. I would like to deal with a substantial project. Therefore, I am not afraid to be confronted to major difficulties !

Write an optimizing C++ compiler.

More seriously: You may want to visit Google Code (or any other shared software development site) and join a project. Open Source is the way to go if you want to write top-notch, non-trivial software in your spare time.
