Might sound little odd, but it's quite important for me for some presentation issues.

So should it be :

  • "m|y|s|q|l" ? (spelled)
  • "my squale" ?
  • "my seek well" ?

or something completely different?

MySQL is officially pronounced /maɪˌɛskjuːˈɛl/ ("My S-Q-L").

from: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MySQL

Good, I've read this, but some people told me that's incorrect. I argued with them, so I am looking here for someone who can confirm from prax (although wikipedia rox, I know :))
Xorty
That's why Wikipedia has references :). "The official way to pronounce “MySQL” is “My Ess Que Ell” (not “my sequel”), but we do not mind if you pronounce it as “my sequel” or in some other localized way." - http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.1/en/what-is-mysql.html So it really comes down to weather you want the official pronunciation or the one that people (incorrectly) use the most.

Yep My S Q L is probably correct, but I am definitelly going to sound ... "funny"
Xorty

I've always heard My Sequel

me too.........

Haha, funny that you write 'sequel'...
Xavier Ho
@Xavier Ho: It's always been the standard homonym for `SQL`.

Downvote?? My statement was completely factual.

@egrunin: Rest assured, you'll still have the highest votes. And I upvoted for you, too.

My is the name of Monty Widenius' first daughter, pronounced (roughly) "mew", followed by S-Q-L (ess-cue-ell).

I'd vote for My Sequel as well, especially as SQL has been around a long time and has always been pronounced as Sequel. However, though Wikipedia is not as factual as it c(sh)ould be, in this case it is probably right as even the official MySQL about page refers to this Wikipedia page for historical information. So I'd say your best bet would be to go with My-S-Q-L.

Correct pronunciation is My Ess Que Ell(My-S-Q-L). but it really doesn't bother me if anybody says it My Sequel or M-Y-S-Q-L.

But I don't know if I would get if anyone write My Ess Que Ell.

It's one of those dumb religious questions that gets people needlessly annoyed with each other. Personally I think of SQL as being pronounced ess kew ell, but there are lots of people who think of it as "sequel". As Joonas points out, it's "officially" "my ess kew ell", but that's not worth much.

Although I think of SQL as being ess kew ell, when someone writes about MS SQL Server, I always think of it as being "sequel server", because it sounds better that way. :)

+1: I tend to pronounce it 'musical' or 'myu-skel' but I don't care how other people pronounce it.
