I did search SO for what I am after but didn't find anything suitable.

I am mainly interested in a free software management tool. I guess it would part of some project management tool but I am in particular after feature management tool. A tool that would allow me to group features, assign build/version number to particular feature, tick if the feature was already implemented. It would be nice if the tool is multi user and I would be able to install it on my webhosting or it is provides as a service somewhere.

I use Trac for years now. I tested almost every free and non free software that came out, and still using Trac. There is a lot of Trac hosting out there and they are very cheap.

@Pierre Mengal: thank you for that. I can see that quickly had a look at Track before posting my question here. Can I do the feature management in Track? I haven't found before and I cannot see not either. Right now I am mainly after 'feature management'. List them, categorize, ticked as implemented, have different tags for them, display in a tree kind of view, mark as 'maybe in the future' etc ect

Yes you can do that with Trac. You can also check for the free plugin called Agilo42: http://www.agile42.com/cms/pages/agilo/

I was trying to play with Trac demo and couldn't figure out how to do the feature manangement...

A feature is a ticket in the "normal" edition. A feature is a user story in agilo42
Pierre 303
yes but how can I do some kind of tree view and hiearchy of tickets in Trac? Couldn't work this out
Radek
You have the following hiearchy: Epic, User Story, Task
Pierre 303
oh ok. I was looking for custom hierarchy ....
Radek
Are you sure you need that level of complexity ?
Pierre 303
to be honest? no, I'm not sure.Never done anything like that before ... I thought it would be great to display/see features that way.

SO, we are using VisionProject (www.visionproject.se). It has quite a lot of good functionality that some of their competitors don't have. The way we are using to group features is to create an item as group and then create sub-items as the specific features for the feature concept. There is also a solution that we use in other areas, where you can link an item to other items. This way you can create different groups of features and then, whenever new things come up, you can select to link it the group. This way you don't need to know, before you set it up, where to put it. We also use their version management to assign a feature to a version(or build if you want to use that name). Now, it is not for free, but is very affordable (at least the cheapest that I have found for that amount of functionality).
