So it would have something like:

  • Social player (calculated: 16 hours)
    • create mockup (est: 4 hours)
    • implementation (calculated: 12 hours)
      • fix orbited on IE and firefox (est: 6 hours)
      • non-owner interface (est: 3 hours)
      • owner interface (est: 3 hours)

Calculated means that it's the total of all the estimates at lower levels. Ideally, you'd be able to tag todo items, too, so I could tag certain things as "required" or "nice to have" and say "how much time would it take to get all required things done in the implementation phase of the social player".

I can't find anything that fits the bill exactly. Any suggestions?

Microsoft Project is the way to go although there may be an open source solution. With Project you can set milestone for each project and sub projects. Total project hours can be composed of subproject.

I use linux. Does Project have a web interface?

we have implemented somthing similar with Enterprise Elements.

www.enterprise-elements.com

you have to do a little bit of roll-your-own for the way you want that hierarchy to work, and then use sql to define the rules for summary and rollups and scorecards etc. but works nicely.

Randy
This looks more like a programming framework than project management software. The web site does a very poor job explaining what "Enterprise Elements" does or times when you'd want to use it.

Pivotaltracker looks interesting, it is free. You can use labels (or tags) to get the functionality you seek. Check out the 'Intro Video' under learn more.

Putte
Pivotal looks cool, but it looks like it works at the level of "stories" and doesn't allow you to split a story into smaller subtasks.
SnacksOnAPlane
Can you link to the source code? I looked at this, and I don't see it as being open source. It's free to use, but that's really a very different proposition.
Walter Mundt
@Walter Mundt, Yes you are right. No source code seems to be available. I have edited the answer.
Putte
@SnacksOnAPlane, Maybe it is mot exactly what you seek but there seems to be a way to break down "Stories" - http://www.pivotaltracker.com/help#canibreakdownastoryintosmallertasks

There's also dotproject. Open source, web based... Progress on the current version has slowed in the last few years as they focus on a rewrite, but it still appears very active.

Unfortunately the website is awful and the demo doesn't work so I can't really tell if it would be useful.

You might look at FogBugz, which I've heard does pretty decent project management in addition to bug tracking. Not free, though, for more than a single user.

Try this - http://docs.google.com/previewtemplate?id=0As3tAuweYU9QcHlVM3hrY2tocEkxbDlmdWRxbFlnTEE&mode=public

Be sure to take a look at gadget tab provided at the bottom.

This is good! If it was a little more intuitive, it would be perfect. I might try to make some modifications.

Agilefant is another planning tool we have thought about to use in out organisation. Open source, code available on SourceForge. Check out 'Features->Quick Tour'.

Putte
This looks really good. I'll have to try it out!

That is exactly how we are using it (if I understand you correctly). We are using VisionProject (www.visionproject.se). It is implemented like that by design, but you can also configure the system quite a lot to make it look easier for some people and to be more complex where you need it.

Project management with subtasks and time estimates? Why not go for web crm www.worketc.com where subtask creations is unlimited and time tracking software already integrated. No more switching between platforms – just in one interface, everything you need plus more –collaboration tool, billing, helpdesk, to name a few.

I understand what actually you want and I prefer proofhub which easily can handle your projects and also manage time. Its features are appreciable and I think you should see it once just click here.

Proofhub is a good option and I personally suggest you. This is a hub of all features and it is web based software which manages project management and handle time.
