Hi,

I am trying to understand the different between these 2 licenses, but it all seems very unclear...

I found a discussion here but it didn't really help.

As anyone got a clear view on what the difference actually is, if any ?

Cheers David

Maybe this link will be helpful.

Thanks! but that's exactly the type of info that's confusing me. The CDDL is said to be OK for linking with code under a different license and also OK for releasing changes under a different license, but then wikipedia says that CDDL is also incompatible with GPL...

and the table says that the LPGL doesn't allow the redistribution of changes under a different license, but as far as I know it is GPL compatible...

The question is, WHY do you need to know this. If it's intellectual curiosity, I suggest you read the whole text of the licenses. If you want to release some code, BSD/MIT will make it available to the largest audience. Otherwise, if in doubt, ask a lawyer :-)Anyway, main differences are whether the license is viral and to which extent (GPL/LGPL/Affero), whether incorporation into other works requires acknowledgment (old BSD), etc.

why? well because they both seem to do more or less the same job but I don't understand the details and reading the whole text of the licenses doesn't really help (I'm not a lawyer).

In my previous comment I mentioned some of the main differences.

No, you didn't. You exposed the topics in which most licenses have differences and gave GPL,BSD, etc as examples... I still don't know the different between CDDL and LGPL, and you don't seem to know either, so I guess I'll ask a lawyer
