Hello all,

A little company is developping a software for my business. I would like to know if it would be possible that I ask them to get the full source code. (I want to be independent)

Do you think it would be possible?

Do you think they will charge me an extra amount for that ? (probably)

Thanks,

Obviously you should ask them first. I would definitely expect an extra charge for this since they will be exposing their intellectual property.

If they are hesitant to give you the source code, you can often arrange for escrow of the code with a reputable provider (Iron Mountain is one, there are others). The idea is that, should the company go bankrupt or otherwise disappear, you will be able to make a claim and receive the full source code for future usage and maintenance.
