Is it about timeless programming principles or has the second edition made it obsolete?

+1 for timeless!

It's not obsolete.

Assuming your asking because you can get the first addition free/cheap I would say go for it. If not, the 31 dollars you can get the second edition for is totally worth it if you are serious about programming.

There are some advantages to the first edition. The first edition is quicker to read. The content added to the second edition is good stuff, but makes the book more dense. Reading all the first edition will do you more good than reading half the second edition.
