I just realized that the business behind wyiswyg web editors is selling you the image upload plugin.
Which is the alternative if you can't/don't want to pay?

In that case, let's skip 3 years into the future (or less in the past) with http://www.tyssendesign.com.au/articles/cms/file-and-image-management-plugins-for-tinymce/ . But we're still googling. Perhaps it would be good if you indicate what you've googled, tried, and discarded yourself?
