what is single-node programming models

I am reading some article about pervasive computing, and lots of place mention about "single-node programming models" in distributed computing.

i try to search "single-node programming", cannot really find something that i can understand.

So does anyone anything about this programming model...

I just want to know what is it. and how it works.
