MySQL Cerification

I am PHP / MySQL programmer. I want to know what do you think about MySQL Certification (for developers)? In my opinion it looks like simple but expensive exam (~2 x 200$). Is it worth to pass it?

A:

Getting certified in MySQL isn't a bad idea, but it can't always be a good idea either. Just because you believe you are decent with something, doesn't mean you NEED to get certified in it.

By passing, you just prove to people that you know your MySQL. In fact, it'll make you look better than the guy without a certification who knows just as much. Though still, unless your job is strictly in the MySQL area, I think it's a waste of time.

Just like the Zend Certification for PHP. All it does is allow you to brag about it/show it off. It won't make you any smarter.

My friend (more experienced programmer) told me that it is always better to have certificate then not to have. Because when a lot of people apply for job position then with certificate I will be higher on stack. It gives me bigger chance for interview.

Certification makes you smarter because you learn something new while preparing for exam.

Yes, certification does bring you up in job rank. I know I didn't say that verbatim, but I insinuated it. Though while having a certificate can help you get a job faster, so can a degree. I'd say that a person with a B.S in Computer Science or Computer Information Systems would rank higher than someone with just a certificate.
