Don't Make Me Think by Steve Krug is worth a look (I'm not claiming it's the best because I haven't read enough to know!)

The Humane Interface by Jef Raskin is a classic and must-read.
Very good information on UI design and human interaction, you'll find yourself going back after reading it to collect all the gems into your own UI design checklist.

Once you've read Don't Make Me Think, pick up a copy of The Design of Everyday Things. Those two books have made more of an impact on how I think about web usability than any others.

I've not read The Design of Everyday Things, but have heard good things about it.
