How does database make paying for things online possible?

I agree with Michael Petrotta that the question is vague, but I'll take a stab at it anyway.
A merchant needs to be able to ask a credit card company in real time if they can have funds to pay for something. This requires the credit card company to run an online database, as your balance could have been altered 5 minutes ago, and might now be over the credit limit, etc.
