Genealogy, anyone?

I'm wondering if there are any other genealogy software programmers here at Stackoverflow.

If there are, this might be a great forum to post our genealogy programming questions to each other using the tag: genealogy.

Or is there another good forum already used somewhere where genealogy programmers discuss issues and help each other?

(If someone thinks this should be a community wiki post, I'll be happy to change it)

I haven't experimented with it, but the LDS Church offers a RESTy web service interface to their genealogical database, which records on the order of one billion people.

They also run a low-traffic mailing list which may be a better forum than SO for programming questions that really are specific to genealogy. However, a lot of the problems encountered in genealogy are typical of any data-cleansing operation. Some of the heuristics employed to help sift out accurate relationships between records might be specific to a domain, but a lot of the principles are the same.

Most of the questions I've asked here at Stackoverflow have been related to efficient programming for loading and processing large Genealogy files. I've found this to be a wonderful place to discuss issues and the answers have been especially helpful. I also try to contribute answers where I can.

Thank you for reminding me of the Family Search API. I'll add that on the things to do list for my genealogy program.

There's a forum for the genealogy website Geni at http://forum.geni.com/. You might find something there.

No. That's a forum for users of the Geni online genealogy site. It is not a forum for programmers.

Hi, I actually had to try to basically re-create Geni.com for a project here at work using Flex 3.0 and ActionScript. I am very interested in how you automatically represent family trees (with divorces, etc.) using vector graphics. I've thought about SVG? An open problem for me. None of the programs I've used for genealogy do an adequate job of drawing family trees. A custom one always looks better, but takes a whole lot more time.

Of the several hundred genealogy programs and utilities out there, quite a number of them that specialize in drowing a family tree, and many do so in unique ways. Check out http://www.gensoftreviews.com and search for "draw" or "graph" or "visual" to get a few.
