I am evaluating Microsoft Search Server 2010 Express for use in a .NET project. Based on this diagram http://www.microsoft.com/enterprisesearch/searchserverexpress/en/us/compare.aspx, I get the impression that if you have Search Server by itself, you get a smaller set of features than if you have Search Server and SharePoint 2010 installed.

I downloaded "Search Server 2010 Express" here http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=cea31a4f-a8b4-4864-b520-be612becdcfa&displaylang=en and installed it, and it seems to have implicitly installed SharePoint 2010, or at least a scaled-down version of it.

  1. Is what I installed the "by itself" product that is listed in the middle column of the chart on that web page, or is this the "SharePoint 2010" version on the right, considering that it seems to have included an installation of SharePoint?

  2. We are interested in using the BDC features to index some information we have in a SQL database. Are these features available in the "by itself" version (if there is such a thing)?
