I'm about to embark on a project (to get the details that may help one understand the context: read here) that will involve up to 10 electronic devices in buses. However, I've hit a snag.

Price is a concern. That pretty much ruled out Android since we wouldn't be getting a contract and finding cheap Android phones without a contact is easier said than done. From there I went to getting unlocked, first-generation iPhones on eBay which, so far, is promising however I, nor do any of my team mates, own a Mac. If the iPhone is our best bet then accommodations can be made but they'll be uncomfortable and I'd rather find something more fitting.

Here are my requirements:

  1. Fully functional GPS
  2. Low cost (below $250)

Things that would be luxury:

  1. Wifi capable
  2. Touch screen

Beyond that, I'm pretty flexible. Is there a product out there that meet my needs, or am I asking for too much?

You could use an Arduino with various 'shields' to create a device that meets your requirements. e.g. http://www.ladyada.net/make/gpsshield/

Perhaps you could save money on a touch screen too by simply counting how many times a beam is broken across the aisle as people enter or leave the bus. Wifi back to base on return or simply take the unit in and dock it to transfer the data.

Why not Andoid?? Android is on more than just cell-phones (e.g, the Barnes & Noble Nook).

There are a bunch of slate/tablet PCs out there running Android - you can get one with a 7" screen for $99 on eBay. That one doesn't have GPS, but does have USB, so you could add a USB GPS.

However, there are slate PCs with Android and GPS. Look here, for instance.

I am looking for something similar myself, so will keep watching this question and post anything that I might find.
