How can I create a "grid" layout where everyone knows their neighbour?

Hey there guys, I was wondering what the easiest way to create a grid-layout in Javascript/jQuery that will allow each "node" to talk to their nearest neighbours (up, down, left and right).

Does anyone have an idea?! :)
