I am trying to ditch PHP and focus on .NET/C#. I think with PHP you are limited to web stuff only and jobs seem to pay lower compared to other programming languages.

What is your opinion?

Is there any other technology that seems to be in demand?

My main issues with PHP are:

  1. The language normally never changes / it is simple to learn so anyone out there interested in programming ends up doing php so if compared to other languages, php developers are not paid as much.

  2. There are too many PHP frameworks that are not backed by large companies so when applying for jobs, companies want you to have experience with the different frameworks

  3. The thing I like with .NET is that large companies with a lot of cash are normally the ones who use it because it is expensive, unlike php which is free n so anyone out there can use it

What do you think?

@GeeDawg - it would also be worth rewording the question to make it less argumentative

I am not trying to argue that PHP is not a good language, I sleep, eat and drink PHP,Mysql,Java Script, jquery, css etc. All I am trying to do is focus on a career path that pays more. I don't want to end up in a flooded market that is not as fulfilling.

you should never know just one language, If your a web based developer then you should know PHP,Mysql,.NET,Java Script,Python etc.

c# × 107603
java × 66462
php × 58183
.net × 51921
javascript × 50165
asp.net × 47900
c++         × 41050
python × 33842
sql × 26812
html × 23617

These are the popularity statistics from So, and you should have at least dabbled in all of these and know most of them.

As Alec says "A good programmer uses the best language for the given situation." and I stand by that, a large framework is not jsut oen language but many to get the best out of an application,

I am good in PHP,Mysql,Java Script, jquery. The fact is i do not want to be old and regret why I chose the open source route.
