If you are using Windows, use TCPVIEW to see what process is using port 1099.

If you are using Linux or Mac OS X, use netstat like this:

$ netstat -nat | grep 1099

If there is something on the output, use lsof to identify the process using that port.

You can add extra parameter to netstat (at least on Linux) : -p, it shows also program witch occupies given port.

@Lukasz: good point!

This looks familiar, I think I ran into it at work once. To fix it I closed Outlook, Skype, and Trillian; then I tried to start JBoss and it worked. It didn't happen to you previously because the application bound to 1099 wasn't running.

You probably have a previous instance of JBoss running in the background. If not, then there is another program using RMI active.

You have two options:

  1. Kill the other service that is using port 1099
  2. Change the JNDI port that JBoss uses.

In my case, I found out what was using port 1099 by using the "netstat -an" command and looking for port 1099. My computer had Pidgin connecting to the local jabber chat server from local port 1099 to remote port 5222. Pidgin only appears to let me change the port I connect TO not the one that it connects FROM.

If you are running JBoss from Eclipse, you can change the port that JBoss uses from 1099 to a different port by double-clicking the server name in the server tab to bring up the "Server Overview". You should change the JNDI port from 1099 to a different port in that case.

JBoss Server Overview in Eclipse

If you are not using Eclipse, use this tutorial on Configuring Ports from the JBoss Community Wiki.
