How much network knowledge does a SQL Server DBA need to have in order to do their daily work? Are their any good resources to recommend? (websites, books, blogs etc)

A:

That's two different levels of abstraction. A DBA should need have no knowledge of networks beyond the fact that it may be up or down and, if it's down, you can't contact the database servers across said network.

Of course, that's not to say the knowledge is useless. It can be quite handy to actually track down a problem preventing your database for working properly but that's not part of the DBA role itself. Even DBA's should be well rounded individuals with various skills under their belts.

It's quite handy to tell your network people that you've isolated a problem to the router on the fourth floor, or that intranet access is fine but the internet is not. This makes their job easier and will speed up your recovery.
