All,

My partner is dipping her toes into the world of web design. The goal is for her to be good specifically at web graphics and CSS/HTML. We’re not sure what the best way forward is with learning how to create high quality web graphics (icons and other web page art). There is Adobe Photoshop which is probably more relevant for media/publishing etc., then there is Illustrator and I’ve recently heard of Fireworks.

Which of these would be the best starting point? She has started dabbling on Photoshop but there’s way too much photo editing/retouching stuff in there that isn’t very relevant to what she wants to learn. Is Fireworks the way to go? I want to mention that she wants to go in depth while learning and learn the right tools (yes, Paint.NET is great but...) – I have a little web business myself and she would spruce it up when the time is right.

PS - Are there are outstanding books you would recommend specifically on learning to create quality web graphics?
