You are confusing stream I/O and file I/O - ifstream is not an int, it is an object.

The read() function (from <stdio.h>) takes a file descriptor, not an ifstream object. You should probably use ifstream's read() method instead:

files.read(filebuffer, sizeof(filebuffer));
int bytes_read = files.gcount();
if(files.eofbit && !bytes_read)
    break;
if(files.badbit)
   error("error reading file");

No, you should use a `char*` instead: `char *p = buffer;` though this is incorrect as written because you haven't declared `buffer` anywhere or used it anywhere else; maybe you meant `filebuffer`? Basically, never use `void*` for a pointer you have to increment or decrement.

I meant filebuffer, which i declared as an array 256
