Is there any alternative to caché that is as performant and scalable but free ?and if possible for .NET ?

A:

I know that this might be a comment, but I still will write it as an answer.

Why do you want free one with such serious demands? Either you:

  1. Don't really need it to be so upscale, and can use simpler one.
  2. Work in big company / for big company. Then you should be able to buy it, either put it in requirements section in your contract, or tell your boss / financial people that you really need it. If you want just to save money then it is strange way. Free usually means lack of support. How will you solve production issues fast? Don't forget to mention it.

Well mysql is free so why not ;) If there wasn't free mysql I doubt there could have been so many successfull startups.
In fact such technologies is not mainstream I think because there is no true enterprise opensource offer as far as I can see - that's why I ask because I may miss some - so people will prefer to continue to use traditional db.
Caché Business Model is wrong: they should have a free version for opensource or free apps.
@user310291 well MySQL is one of few exceptions. But still it is also dual licensed and guaranteed support is not free. Yes, OODBMS is not mainstream, so it it very unlikely someone is brave enough to invest resources into free versions (and earn on support).

@user310291 Caché are successfully earning **money** with their Business Model, so it is definitely not wrong, you just don't like it.

@user310291 i really think that if you want software of enterprise level get ready to pay for it. there are really few exceptions, all of them grew from homemade open source software and then bought by bigger companies. This is true for MySQL, db4o, BerkeleyDB and others.

MySQL exception ? Well it's the 1st DB in the world now. MySQL is dual license Caché should do the same and then they would be sure to become THE leader for years to come. I don't doubt Caché earns money but what about growth ? The highest cost for a Business is Marketing: by offering a dual license like Mysql did they have FREE Advertising by people who are PRESCRIPTORS. Then the medias come etc.
