What does Gravatar collects and how does it do it?

I just read some warnings at http://meta.stackoverflow.com/questions/44717/is-gravatar-a-privacy-risk People claim it collects some "individual user’s personal information". My questions are what exactly personal info it collects and how it gets this personal info. Is it all about the referer header?
