Our company didn't buy any perforce, but I want to use it. For example to install the server and client, is there any license issue?

By default, perforce supports two users and five client workspaces, that's enough for our small company.

detailed licensing as following..

Licensing

You may use software downloaded from Perforce for any purpose you want and for as long as you like, provided no modifications are made to the software.

The Perforce Server supports only two users and five client workspaces unless used with a Perforce License. We will be happy to issue you a free Evaluation License to remove the user/workspace restrictions for a limited time.

It's free and non-expiring, so I'd say go ahead! The last doubt however can only be resolved if you contact perforce yourself.

On perforce's website I read:

Evaluating customers can download our free, non-expiring 2-user version of Perforce. If you require a license for more than 2 users, request a Perforce evaluation license.

and

Free Download Download your free 2-user, non-expiring copy of Perforce now.

you want a warranty for free?
Peter G.
A free warranty is not available from Perforce software.

i am worrying about that ,if i use the free download one forever by default ,will the free perforce server keep safe for my source code that i checked in. Here the safe means #1. it will keep the integrity of the source code #2 the source code can't be transfered to the internet by some backdoor silently.. #3 leak some private information to the internet that's important to our company

what does the Evaluating customers mean? if i use the free one, then i am the evaluating customer? I worry about whether the peforce company may get my infomartion and call us frequently to ask our company to buy it..that's a really noise...
Biwier
It's the same executable that is used for the commercial licensees. These would not like to see backdoors even if they depended on the (not) installed licenses.
Peter G.
ok ,thank you for your attention ..i hope so ,..ok i try to use it ,acturally ,if our company grows big ,i'll buy their license...
Biwier
If that does not stop your worries, you will have to separate the perforce server effectively from contacting the internet. If you worry about the code integrity simply use backups. That is recommended anyway. The perforce server can automatically keep md5sums of all stored files. If you do not trust these you are free to checksum yourself.

We have been using the free 2-user, 5-workspace version for over two years. There are no restrictions (apart from number of users/workspaces) compared to the full product, that I know of.

You even get phone support (of a very high quality), and when I checked with the engineer I spoke to he confirmed that, yes, it was no problem if we wanted phone support on the free/evaluation licence. Just that they would prioritise the full licence customers.

Wow, you get more support than we do! We have an upgrade only license and I was rebuffed by support when I just reported an error and just did want them to notice it as a service for the full support customers. I didn't expect a fix on our behalf in any way and said so.
Peter G.
yes, i was a bit surprised. but that was my experience.
