Can you recommend me programming-related audio books that I can listen to on the bus?

I know a technical book is hard to listen to, I'm more interested in something like programming principles, soft skills, get ready for a nice workday. I searched and could not find anything that looked at least a bit interesting.

A:

I listen to the Stackoverflow podacast and the herding code podcast.

How about good programming podcasts like:

Software Engineering Radio http://www.se-radio.net

If you are into Java, the Java Posse:

http://www.javaposse.com

If you are into .NET, .NET Rocks

http://www.dotnetrocks.com

Of course, the StackOverflow podcast is pretty good:

StackOverflow, IT Conversations, Hanselminutes, and DotNetRocks are all good

+1 for SE radio. That is the only one that is consistently stellar.

Also try the podcasts from undergraduate comp sci courses... stand by for links.

http://webcast.berkeley.edu/courses.php

and

http://ocw.mit.edu/OcwWeb/Electrical-Engineering-and-Computer-Science/index.htm

they can be found in itunes

Note that many of the other podcasts might be "lighter" listening. SE radio and the courses do require a bit more attention and the others may be more suitable for what you want in that type of environment.

As for audiobooks, you should find what you want to read/listen to then go to audible.com or another such site to download the books.

My local library has a collection of audiobooks - on cd (I rip them) and in ipod format. I have not checked for technical books and I suspect those would be impossible to find at a local library.

If nothing else, this is at least intersting:

Gödel, Escher, Bach

Thanks, this is a great idea; I heard about the book, it's time to "read" it
Germstorm
awesome, and it's fairly long so you won't be looking again in a day

Is this available as in audio? I've looked around for it.

While it's not exactly programming, Security Now is a great podcast to get you thinking about sec and code; the early episodes have a good introduction to stacks, encryption, and secure coding.

I haven't read/listened to either of these but two audiobooks i've considered are:

  • "Lean Thinking" (Womack and Jones)
  • "How to Win Friends & Influence People"

I only considered the latter because it was mentioned by Joel and Jeff in their list of recommeneded 'soft' books. There may be others that they recommended available as audiobooks.

it depends
Thank you for the idea, I cannot mark two answers as favorite so I'm at least voting it up

Can't the Kindle read any book to you?
