I've got a client with a critical website down.

The site is written in PHP & the website host upraded from php4 to php5).

It's a Sunday here and I was wondering where you would suggest are the best job boards or similar for getting somone with 'reputation' competent enough to complete the fixes?

Edit: Not sure why this has gotten downvotes. I can use google thanks. I'm assuming you'd be answering based on experience not quick fingers.

Does anyone have any actual experience with hiring or doing work through any of the suggested sites.

php4 downgrade: Host notified client of changes. First I hear of it is when booking system goes down.

You could try to Rent a Coder.

Rent a Coder is inappropriate for short time-sensitive projects as their terms explicitly allow the coder to back out up to 24 hours later with no penalty.

The best fix would be to downgrade to PHP4.

If the client doesn't have control over that then it can't be a very critical website.

User needs a host that wont jerk him around. It will be cheaper than hiring someone to upgrade the site, and a fast upgrade is sure to be buggy.

"If the client doesn't have control over that then it can't be a very critical website." This just isn't so. Just because people don't make good decisions, doesn't mean they don't pay for or care about them.

I second the sentiment. If the site was that critical, it would be hosted on dedicated servers.

Yeah, maybe the real hidden question here is WHY the host force-upgraded people to PHP5?
Jeff Atwood
The client is a very small airline that outsourced its I.T. and so the alos-small ISP emails sent to all hosted clients didn't end up with anyone that could actually understand the implications. My also-small business got lumped with "Please Help!". Which of course I sorted :)

This is why sometimes its best to keep a coder on retainer, or hire one. That way you always have someone standing by if you need it.

Having a network of coders you can call on is about the best answer I'm going to get I reckon.I couldn't find enough good anecdotes on the intertubes regarding the sites rentacoder or guru.
