I have been using the artboard tool in CS4 to crop portions of an image.
Somehow the setting was changed (I assume) and now each image that is cropped has a black outline around where the crop marks were.
How do I prevent this from happening?

The black lines through the image is are artboard, the vector images will not get clipped if the art board is resized this is why you are seeing lines through them, if you want to clip the objects from the outside of the artboard you can make a box around your objects on the top layer right click > make clipping mask.

just to note if you've used photoshop, you will notice you cannot draw outside of the artboard, while illustrator allows you to do this
