How do you pronounce the word 'Tuple'?

TUH - pull

Since I can't vote for my own answers; this is my preference.

TOO - pull

But then I also say 'reet' for rete, which isn't very classical.

It's not like Tooople, it's like "up"... Tuppppple
MattSlay
As I understand it, Tuple comes from n-tuple, which is shorthand for one-tuple, two-tuple, ..., quin-tuple, etc. Would you really say "kwin-too-ple" or would it be "kwin-tuh-ple?"
Michael Todd
Why would you pronounce it like this?! Just say the word "quintuple", then remove the "quin" part.
gnovice
Well yeeeees... quadroople, quintoople, obv. Is this a US-vs-British English division maybe?
bobince
Could be. Interesting...
Erik Forbes
There must be some accent thing going on here.
gnovice
I'm from the US, and I've only ever heard "toople"
Brian Campbell
> Would you really say "kwin-too-ple" or would it be "kwin-tuh-ple?" Yes, and so does the BBC, so it must be right. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/7094945.stm

I am going to go with, depends on which English pronunciation you grew up with. tuh-ple or too-ple are both correct in that regards. I would ask the same question how do you pronounce "about". or for that matter ghoti
DouglasH
did a little more research in general pronunciation of vowels, in theory it is possible that beyond the two presented tah pull would be a third way to pronounce it. for those wondering ghoti is pronounced fish
DouglasH
"gh" as in "laugh", "o" as in "women", "ti" as in "creation". =)
gnovice
Accepting this as the 'answer' because it has the most upvotes.
Erik Forbes
do agree with the quadroople pronunciation. but it is quintuhple sextuhple septtuhple at least in american English. now what does it sound like in scottish English?? in canadian about is pronounced aboot sorry for revisting
DouglasH
My American English dictionary says it should be a long U sound ("quintoople").
Chuck
More like TUE-pull? ;)

Thanks Neil, I'd never heard of that before. I was looking for word play or puns and feeling pretty stupid at not getting the joke for a while. :-)
