I want to develop a site and maintain it. I dont do web development (i know some php and sql). It will have significant ajax. Should i program this site and pay a web developer to do this with me or should i have him do it all and check the code for quality purposes?

I'm mostly afraid javascript and ajax will take me to long to write and a web developer is more suitable for it.

How much is a good web developer per hour? How should i approach this site i want to do?

I think it depends on whether or not you WANT to do web development. If you can afford the $50+ an hour for a good web developer, than that might be a better way to go. If you need it done quickly, that is probably the better approach.

is it really $50 for a good dev or is that a number you threw out to say its expensive?

For a decent contractor I'd say $50 is about right. YMMV. This is assuming that they are in fact 'good'.
