You can do simple diagrams with the free version. Up to 20 or so objects.

No. I tried. You can just test it for 14 days. I downloaded the Standard Edition demo. Costs 99 USD. Pretty much when almost never diagramming anything ;)
Thanks

ArgoUML is probably the leading OSS tool - it's a Java app, so should run anywhere.

I would like to mention that ArgoUML is functional. However, the interface needs some work and it has corrupted some of my diagrams. YMMV.

There are two forms of ArgoUML I have learned. An Eclipse and Non-eclipse version. Agro started out non-eclipse and it looks like a side project ported it to eclipse.

OmniGraffle is really worth the money. Otherwise, you're likely stuck with either the Java tools, or Dia in all its Gtk glory.

Take a look at TopCoder UML tool or ArgoUML. Argo's UI can be a little clumsy sometimes, but it works fine.

I've used Jude Community Edition on the Mac. It's a java application. The UI isn't perfect, but its free and does a pretty good job.

yEd Graph Editor is great to quickly create UML diagrams without the typical UML tool overhead. It's free and it is available for Mac OS, Linux, and Windows.
