I don't know if there are any examples that combine clustering with custom tiles, but you can find some examples of those methods used separately here:

I have seen that example before - it doesn't use tiles and is rather slow and inefficient

There's an example on that page called "Custom Tile Method" which does indeed use tiles. It's described on page 176 of the book.
