Microsoft originally slated the final release build for April 12, 2010. Somasegar said the Visual Studio 2010 and .NET Framework 4 releases will now be pushed back "a few weeks."

I know the version / product name says "2010", but that doesn't necessarily mean that it will RTM in 2010. After all VS'2008 RTM'd in November 2007.

The last Beta of VS'2008 came out in July 2007, and it RTM'd in November. So based on the previous version that places VS'2010 to RTM in September 2010 at the very earliest since the first Beta just came out in May.

Anyone have any other speculations?

They need to deliver by the December 21, 2012 deadline.....

Why Dec. 21, 2012? What makes that date so special?
Chris Pietschmann
There's an urban legend that the world will end on that date: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2012_doomsday_prediction

If the world is ending on that date who the heck cares whether VS 2010 will be RTM, you won't be around to use it!

I could tell you; but then, they'd have to sue me.

Don't worry. The community will pay for your legal expenses.

What's with all the downvotes? I'm an MVP. I might have known the information under NDA. But that's exactly why I wouldn't have been able to tell anyone. Neither would anyone else who knew the information under NDA.

Mary Joe Foley at ZDNet speculates (from a slideshow) that VS2010 will be released in the April 2010 timeframe.

The launch date is March 22nd 2010 April 12th 2010, so RTM would be a month or so before that since RTM (which is a phase, not a date) doesn't mean 'out in a box to buy', but means the code is complete.

We saw this with Win7, which RTM'd a couple of months ago, but will be launched officially in a couple of days.

edit: Coming out today (April 12, 2010)! Should be available on MSDN Subscriber site at 10am PST (1 PM EST, 5pm UTC/GMT).

This is true, but it seems that MS products RTM about 2 months previous to their release date. I would expect RTM to be in January, but only time will tell.

@Chris, the sooner the better...

Update: Launch date is now 12th April 2010.

Update: RC was released today (9th February 2010).
Nick Haslam
VS2010 RC is unavailable in MSDN for download (for subscribers), I'm assuming they are getting ready to drop the binaries and update the page.

Just looked at the MSDN Subscribers site, and VS2010 RC is still on there (in Premium, Professional and Ultimate Flavours)

Because this thread ranks high in Google search results, I thought I'd add some new information from Microsoft. Apparently, VS2010 RTM has been delayed due to performance reasons. Although no specific date was mentioned, it will be after March 22, 2010:

From Microsoft: http://blogs.msdn.com/somasegar/archive/2009/12/17/visual-studio-2010-and-net-framework-4-beta-period-extended.aspx

I'm currently only allowed to post a single link, but here is a good story from an industry blog (cut-and-paste link):

I'm glad they are working that out. I have a very nice system and VS2010 beta2 takes over 3 minutes to startup, and opening files or any work on it it just painful... If anyone has used the beta they know the Microsoft still has some performance work todo

Just spoke to Microsoft MSDN Chat. It RTM's and is available for MSDN subscribers on April 12, 2010. The Microsoft Rep directed me to this page.

Basically they are taking down MSDN for benefits April 9th at 5:00 pm. It will come back up on april 12th at 6:00 am. This is to modify the memberships for msdn and to launch Visual Studio 2010.

If you buy a membership before April 12th, they automatically upgrade you one level of membership on April 12th. So if you have professional then you get premium, etc. etc. Can't afford to miss out on that one.
