I am looking for opensource Streaming server.

I have played around VLS/VLC before.

Have any of you used Darwin from Apple?

Are there any other options available?

A:

There's VLS from videolan.org and ffserver from the MPlayer guys, I haven't tried either of them though.

I've used Darwin Streaming Server (DSS 5.x) quite a lot for video streaming.

Pros:

  • full featured streaming server (semi-professional)
  • easy configuration (config file)
  • works well on Linux

Cons:

  • works not so well on Windows
  • using the loop feature sometime result in audio/video sync loss

Flumotion, a streaming server written on top of Python, Twisted and GStreamer.

Disclaimer: I work on this, as does our company. On the plus side though, that means it's maintained.

The liveMedia streamer + streaming media library available from www.live555.com. It's an open-source cross-platform standard compliant library written in c++ with a very active mailing list handling RTP/RTCP/RTSP, and many payload formats.

AFAIK VLC uses the liveMedia library internally.

For flash based clients, look into Red5. It supports many Codec's and is built ontop of Spring, which opens up many doors to you.

I'm a fan of icecast. It's an open source version of Shoutcast. It's only audio though.
