G'day,

When was the last time you did something new? And what was it?

  • Language - Erlang?, Haskell?, C++ instead of C?, Ruby?, C# from Java?, etc.
  • Platform - Linux from Unix?, ASP.NET from .NET?, Unix from Windows?, etc.
  • IDE - Eclipse from VS?, Netbeans?, etc.
  • Approach - OO from functional decomposition, etc.
  • Role - Architect from developer?, BA from developer?, etc.
  • Others ...

cheers,

I'm a scientist, I do something new every day :P and it's not as fun as it seems, but sometimes it really is. I mean, it's a matter of lifestyle.

In any case, to answer your question. I started tinkering with triplestore databases. They look cool.

Well, for work I learned to use a simplified Domain-Specific language which uses only a few basic structures, thus making programming a bit more of a challenge. And as a hobby, I finally created a single animation out of a few thousand rendered images, with a woman walking through some streets. It's no "Finding Nemo" or other Pixar movie but hey, about 8 minutes of movie isn't bad for an amateur. :-)

I have been developing on the Microsoft Windows platform for 25 years. A couple of months ago I started developing in objective c on the Mac. I'm enjoying the change.

I try to do new things all the time. Right now I am working on:

  1. Learning F# (currently I work with C#).
  2. Working on refining a process for designing mockups and proposals for system enhancements at work.

In search of the perfect math/logic speed cocktail, I tried benzedrine and a cotton candy sandwich. Never been so productive.

Learned git. Started around March. Took three months. I now have a love-hate relationship with git.

iPhone development. Went all out and got an iMac 24", my first Apple PC and second Apple product. The iPhone being the first Apple product. After nearly 3 decades of "Apple avoidance", I am hooked. Right now that is my "something new" :)
