I need to get up to speed with MOSS 2007. The initial requirements are quite limited but I want to make sure that the basic structure does not make future expansion difficult. I am fairly new to MOSS 2007 but have some experience with SPS 2003.

Can anyone recommend lively SharePoint groups or forums where I can get answers to my questions within a reasonable time? (I'm not expecting StackOverflow response times!)

Here are some of my current questions:

  • What URL structure to use for a multi-lingual intranet portal? /en/Home, /de/Home or Home-en, Home-de?
  • Does MOSS offer any other alternatives for choosing URL based on browser language?
  • I want to use Active Directory to map users to MOSS groups. Is it possible to grant access to a site to users with AD-GroupA AND AD-GroupB?

Thanks

Well, I am quite frequent here on SO and usually Alex angas is as well. A lot of the questions asked here get answered fairly quick. Another good forum is the SharePoint Products and Technologies forum on Technet.

To answer your questions:

  1. I go with the language code only usually, so the url would something like www.yourdomain.com/en-us, www.yourdomain.com/nl-NL (or just en and nl), where either one is the variation root (variations are the way sharepoint manages translated content).

  2. Don't think so, It does however provide a change language option when using variations.

  3. Not sure what you mean here? Access should only be granted when a user is both in AD-A AND in B? if so, then the answer is No.

Point 3. Yes that's what I meant. Thanks for your comments!Do you think this is the right forum for Sharepoint design questions?

The general guide (which you probably know) is:

  • Stack Overflow is for programming questions

  • Server Fault is for systems administration questions

Having said that, SharePoint covers a lot of bases and it's not always clear where a question should be asked (either in this family of sites or somewhere else). Also it's true that non-programming questions get asked here and also get answered.

The downside with asking non-programming questions on this site is that its quality can become diluted with questions such as how to configure the product. Those sorts of questions do not belong here as they are not programming related.

So if the questions you asked above had been phrased to ask "can I do this out of the box or does it need development, and if so how" then they would be appropriate. I don't see any of these questions as fitting this requirement. Colin's link to Social TechNet would be the best place to ask them.

Hope this is more helpful!

I don't have a Microsoft background being more of a Java person. As there seem to be quite a few Sharepoint answers around here I thought I would see where those people go to get help...

Thanks! I always check for previous questions before posting a new question but I missed that one totally.
