Lot's of tricks and in-house knowledge.
One example: using an OLEDB connection manager to connect to Excel.

This is the book that I always recommend after my Intro to SSIS presentation: Professional Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Integration Services
Brian Knight and Eric Veerman are MVPs that are the best in the business when it comes to SSIS.
As far as SSRS, I really learned a lot after reading this book by Stacia Misner: Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Reporting Services Step by Step
