I just installed wordpress on my local machine because I want to learn some basic web development tools and wordpress has all the components I want to play with. There is a lot going on when wordpress presents a page inside the browser and I would like to get a handle on all of it if possible. So do you have any suggestions on where I should get started and what beginner friendly resources are out there that don't shy away from presenting technicalities?

To get started with wordpress i would suggest starting with their knowledge base http://codex.wordpress.org/Main_Page. The codex is quiet useful for beginners and advanced users alike OR you may want to buy the book, Digging into wordpress by Chris Coyier. This is a very nice book for starters. It guides you through basics of wordpress from scratch.
