Where to begin my quest for knowledge in regards to OCR/ICR?

Question

I'm in search of and useful source of knowledge on Optical/Intelligent Character Recognition, Image and Pattern recognition.

Any books, papers, websites and whatever.

UC Berkeley's Electronics Research Laboratory (ERL - the "computer science department") had a pretty strong program for quite some time and produced some pretty interesting results on image analysis, including work on textures. I remember a paper called, "yellow flowers" which articulated the results of some pretty impressive research. ...This was an immediate precursor to the "Digital Library Project", circa 1995.

I can tell you that at least at the time there was no one better.
