Hello all. I was directed here by the Google Android Devs Group. I'm still not sure if this is the place I need to be. I've been on forum after forum and asked the same question but no one seems to know the answer or will tell me the REAL correct place to find it. I have a Samsung Moment with Android 2.1. I can not get videos that DID play on Android 1.5 to play on 2.1 now with very few exceptions. I'm not just talking about different videos with the same format, I'm talking about some of the exact same videos that did play in 1.5 will no longer play in 2.1. These are almost all AVI files. If Android doesn't support AVI natively with it's own stock media player then why or how was I able to play these videos flawlessly on 1.5? The way I always played the videos was viewing my SD card, tapping the thumbnail of the video I wanted, and it would automatically open up in the phones media player right away. Now the phone locks up and then eventually gives an error message. Please tell me someone here knows what is going on and if there is a way to fix this. Or if nothing else, tell me where I do need to look to ask this question and find an answer. Thank you.

Sounds like you may have had something installed on 1.5 before you upgraded that is no longer there.

Thanks for the reply. It wouldn't be something I personally installed because I had a tech at the Sprint store try my SD card with the videos in his Moment also with 2.1 and he had the same problem. Too much of a coincidence. There have been reports of many others with this same problem. It's just that no one knows the whys or hows. I'd just be happy to know who to ask who would actually know what the problem is and if it can be fixed. Would it be someone from Samsung? Google? Sprint? Android? Any ideas? I've tried all of them with no luck thus far.

Just to add, I reflashed my phone back to 1.5 to see if those videos still played on it and of course they did. Flashed back to 2.1 and they still did not. Tried both as soon as I did the flashing on each with no extra apps installed. Just what the phone came with.

Could be one of 3 things:

  1. Your SD card or the data on your SD card is damaged in some way, and videos (being incredibly reliant on all the data being correct, especially in the header) may now be corrupt. Therefore, they no longer play.
  2. Android 1.5 has a much older media playing framework than 2.1 (introduced in 1.6). Generally, the updated library improved compatibility with many media types, but you may have found a case where compatibility actually decreased.
  3. As ck says, you had some piece of software on your phone before that you no longer have.

I'd suggest finding someone else with an Android phone (any version), plonking your SD card into it, and see if they can play it. This may provide some clues.

I've all but ruled out the SD card being faulty. I've tried the same videos on 2 different cards, one that came with the phone and one I bought myself, with same results. Videos had worked on both cards on 1.5 but not 2.1. I put my card in another Moment phone running 2.1 and they didn't play in his either. I guess I could try to find an Android phone other than the Moment but not sure how that would matter since I only have the Moment and that's the only one I'm concerned about. About the software, do you mean 1.5 may have come with something that 2.1 didn't causing it to not play them now?

Yes, pretty much. It might be that Samsung made changes to the 1.5 firmware that they didn't make to their 2.1 firmware. However, having never used the Samsung Moment, I can't say.

Thanks for the input guys. This is a bummer but I'm not going to give up on it just yet :-)

So what is "superuser" and how do I find/use it? This place doesn't seem to easy to navigate or find my way around. Probably just me though. Can you provide a link or something? Thanks.
