Both get five star customer reviews on Android. I suspect that there will be an 80%+ overlap in contents, so can anyone say which to buy and why?

If any one has read either, or both, I am particularly interested in developing wifi applications.

Well the Pro Android 2 is "temporarily out of stock", so if you're in a hurry I'd go for the other option...

I have to admit I haven't read either book but I will say that that Reto Meier, the author of Professional Android 2 Application Development, works for Google, so I think that will be the closest you'll get to an official book.

He also answers questions here on Stack Overflow so you could always take a look at what he's written here before buying the book.

I work as an Android developer and I think that Professional Android 2 Application Development is the best android book available. Also Reto Meier, the author, hangs around stackoverflow and answer questions. I think that's priceless and a good way to support his effort is buying his book.

I guess you should also take a look to: Mark Murphy's book he is also very active around here.

I didn't know about Pro Android 2. I will take a look.

I'd second Mark Murphy's books. Very good content, very good online tutorials, and also as Android changes (which is still pretty frequently), so do the content in the books. Commonsware allows you to download updated and revised books for free (for a year I believe) with the subscription.

Pro Android 2 is the best android book IMO. It's not target for novice developer but for professional developers.
