CustomItem in MIDP 2.1 j2me?

Can I have CustomItems on MIDP 2.1 devices. CustomItems work perfectly on MIDP 2.0 devices. Whereas, they don't seem to work on MIDP 2.1 devices. Is there any workaround for this problem?
