I wish to allow user to use my software for free but not to give the source code.

Can you recommend a license?

A:

You can do without a license. Default copyright prevents the user to copy or distribute the code or program without your explicit permission.

That might depend where in the world you are. There are (some) good reasons why lawyers NEVER give answers like this...

The software is going to be available via download sites to any one...

If anybody's going to be able to do whatever they like with the object code, freeRam needs to issue a license. Without a license, I can use a program I legitimately have a copy of, but I can't duplicate it (other than as necessary for use, and IIRC one backup, in the USA), so I can't even run it on two machines.

First, I make assumptions on where the OP lives and that the copyright there is similar to copyright where I live. Just as I make assumptions when answering a technical question. Second, if you ask for legal advice on the internet, that is exactly what you get: 14 year olds which have read a couple of articles on Slashdot and think they know everything about copyright will gladly assist you.

This looks like a reasonable one, from SIL: http://www.sil.org/computing/catalog/freeware.html

Let me clarify the code issue... This software is going to be free to use.For any purpose (private, commercial, what ever..).It will not be open source.... the user will have an exe but no source files.
freeRam
And SIL's license covers that. It's not an open source license. Nowhere does it say that the user will have access to the source files.

ptomato, thanks, i'm going to check SIL...
