I was trying to find an extensive list of projects went from closed source to open source. Since I couldn't find such a list, I think it's worth compiling one. If you know of any, please add: its name and URL if you know it, what type of software is it, some proof that they were not open source from the start (such as a link about them going open source.)

I will add yours here, but they had to have been closed source first

OpenSolaris was initially closed source?!! Please provide some reference before I can add it to the list.
diy
@diy: Are you kidding me? OpenSolaris is *the* most famous proprietary-turned-open project *ever*! It was closed source ever since the first version from 1982, up until 2004. I'm too lazy to google for references right now.

@Jorg, My bad, found it. It used to be called just Solaris before.

You'll find a full list to be fairly difficult to compose: it's usual practice for many companies to release code as open source. Especially, when project is not the biggest money-maker for the company.

A couple of Java examples coming to my mind: web framework Tapestry, developed by Facebook Cassandra and IBM's Derby are all parts of Apache SF right now.

This is why it's been made as a community wiki, so that people can add their findings.

According to [wiki](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Qt_%28framework%29#Licensing), Qt was always open source (using a license not recognized by the OSI)

Unix: Operating System

Has it not always been open source? I couldn't find an news article about it going open source
diy
@diy: BSD Unix (and the various projects spawned from it) is by far the most famous example of closed-source going open-source. See [the history of BSD](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Berkeley_Software_Distribution#History) *(note that what people call "Unix" today is really a family of operating systems - there are some, such as Linux, which have always been open source, and some which have always been and still are closed source)*

Can't find any evidence about it being closed source before. Can you provide a link to a news article?

Global File System, was originally GPL'd, then made proprietary in 2001(?), but in 2004 was re-GPL'd.
