What's the legal age to start signing freelancing contracts?

Currently I'm 16 and going on 17 in October. For the past year or so, I haven't been working without contracts because most of my work is local.

Now, I'm receiving clients from not-so-local places (not in my state to be specific). Is there a legal age for me to begin creating and signing contracts for freelance work?—If not, is there any other way to assure that I get paid?
