Is there any reason that people often tend to develop enterprise applications using J2EE than .NET? Is the cost only main reason to choose technology?

Can't we develop LinkedIn type of applications in .NET?

A:

Here is an article: http://www.relevant.com/pdf/articles/j2eevs.net.pdf

This article specifies that .NET could not serve much better if there are 300+ users. Instead they prefer to choose J2EE.

But I don't believe it is correct. There are so many large applications developed in .NET.

A:

Cost is one reason, but the foremost factor is which technology one (or one's team ...or one's manager ;-) is most familiar with.

The Java enterprise oriented tools are much longer around then the .NET ones. But .NET is catching up, but it's a slow process.
