I hold degrees in computer science and mathematics. Both of these fields are extremely interesting to me. I particularly like high performance computing, statistical computing, c++, distributed computing, and algorithms. I would very much like to experience open source programming but don't really have any ideas of my own and would like to participate/contribute (if that's possible) to open source projects which match my aforementioned interests.

Is this possible? And if so how would I go about doing this? What are some open source projects of this nature which I could contribute to, extend, mirror, and how do I go about doing so?

Thank you, any advice is highly appreciated

A:

There are so many, you'll have to narrow it down by more specific tastes for technology.

A quick idea: the world could really use an open source SPSS work-alike.

You can participate in any open source project by submitting patches to their bug tracker or mailing list.

Get involved with R, by far the most popular open-source platform for statistical computing.
